Desire, never heard of them... does anyone ever heard of NEMESIS?? A doom band formed after Witchcraft, and prior to Candlemass, lead singer, none other that Doom mastermind Leif Edling, very bad vocals, but truly inspiring, that was a great doom metal band...

My favorite besides my dying bride which doesn't counts 'cause they are a very commercial doom band , is Anathema's early works(from the demo ' An illiad of woes' until 'The silent enigma').To bad they have become an atmospheric rock shit...it,s not even metal...Curse you Cavanagh!

Speaking of funeral doom,in my opinion,Shape of Despair , Skepticism , Tyranny , Wormphlegm , Thergothon , Until death overtakes me and Esoteric are the true pioneers of this subgenre(especially ThergothoN)

Funeral doom metal is considered the most depressive subgenre after death/doom(MDB,Anathema,Paradise lost,...) and gothic/doom(Lacrimas profundere,The sins of thy beloved,...).
Back in the year 1990,Niko Sirkiä from Finland formed the group THERGOTHON.They were considered an avant-garde death/doom,which was more depressive and much slower than death/doom.This genre became FUNERAL DOOM.Thergothon recorded 2 demos,one full-length album and split up in 1994.After this they left funeral doom genre and formed THIS EMPTY FLOW which was more gothic/doom and later even gothic/ambient.

So Thergothon were the first pioneers of funeral doom.
The next band inspired by Thergothon was SKEPTICISM.They have 3 full-length albums and they're still active.If you are new in this genre i suggest you should start with them.The album =Farmakon= from 2003 is ideal to start with.Other good funeral doom bands are SHAPE OF DESPAIR...(my favorite funeral doom band).Then,TYRANNY(which i call apocalyptic funeral doom...very crushing),Esoteric(i call it Ethehreal funeral doom) and WORMPHLEGM--You must try those...They're funeral/drone doom metal(i call it THE MOST EXTREME SICK FUNERAL DOOM BAND EVER!!!!...

There are also many experimental funeral doom bands...very rare and hard to find!!!...for example I DROWNED IN A STREAM OF MOURN from USA.The members are teenagers aged between 12 and 16 years old!!!!!!!
Others: MAIDEN VOYAGE and AMARANTHINE TRAMPLER from UK;UNTIL DEATH OVERTAKES ME from Belgium;....LAMENT CHRIST from Peru-impossible to get those.They have only 1 demo...i wish i had it).
